Energy Prices (Early April 2017)

Electricity:

Construction has begun, with the first concrete being poured, of the Hinkley Point nuclear power station in Somerset. The plant is expected to be operational in 2025.

On Saturday the 25th of March UK power demand, in the afternoon, fell lower than overnight demand for the first time ever. This was a result of strong solar power output (as solar power output is embedded, this registers as demand reduction on the UK network).

National Grid called the event a “huge milestone”, while analysts suggest it may become more commonplace over the summer.

Gas:

There could be a boost in US fossil fuel output, weighing on global energy prices following President Donald Trump’s move to sign an executive order removing a number of regulations controlling oil, gas and coal production.

As the storage injection season starts in mainland Europe this could continue to boost exports through the UK-Belgium interconnector, supporting short-term UK gas prices. Meanwhile a seasonal drop-off in wind levels could help boost demand from power generators.
